The ‘Core’ news business is dying. The once ‘casual’ new market online news has now become the standard. The Dilemma takes its toll.
How did they get there? They always thought there was a ‘floor’ to the Core business sinking. And they thought there was a ‘ceiling’ to how high online news could rise. But there is no ‘floor’ and no ‘ceiling’. It just got worse and worse.
For gaming, current analysts are saying there is a ‘floor’ to how bad the Core business can sink. And they say that there is a ‘ceiling’ to how high the new generation can rise. But, likewise, there is no ‘floor’ and no ‘ceiling’.
There is a dangerous assumption that PS 3 and Xbox 360 will stop sinking and rise while Wii will stop rising and sink. No one asks how high the Wii will go, only when will it start to sink. What if it doesn’t? What if it keeps growing? What happens then? And what if PS3 and Xbox 360 DON’T find a way to reverse a sinking tide against them? What happens?
Not trying to be controversial here or predicting it will happen. It is simply asking questions that I do not hear being asked. In the military, they have something called ‘contingency plans’ when everything goes wrong. Businesses also need contingency plans.
Can the Core get sick, die, and have the Expanded Audience take over? Yes. That is what The Dilemma is all about.
I have no idea how people keep making the mistakes over and over agin. Look at the disk drive industry it would get disrupted every time and then the disruptors would let themselves become disrupted! I have a feeling that Microsoft is keen for disruption as well. Maybe then everyone will stop calling Bill Gates a genius and realize that he got money throw shady business practices. Thats why people like Steve Jobs and Nolan Bushnell are so bitter not because they are jealous of his smarts! No because Bill Gates is lucky! His only skill is his ability to get into the industry at just the right time. I think he realizes that Microsoft is being disrupted slowly as well it would explain why he stepped down from head of Microsoft. Its why he’s so scared of the Ipod and Playstation and even Linux. Because he is being disrupted.
I went way of course and I don’t know if I was even on track or right with what I said but its what i believe is true.

“I have no idea how people keep making the mistakes over and over agin.”
Just I read once, I don’t remember where: “The Humans are the only animals stupid enough for fall in the same trick twice”. We don’t have only instincts, we have a ton of anothers feelings too. The worst ones stops our learning for a better place, until a crisis appears and everything has to be re-organizated. Just like now.

I don’t think anyone gets ‘lucky’ in business. At least not that lucky.

Bill Gates was at the right place at the right time. And just because its unlikely doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

Hey, does anyone here have that link showing the profits of the gaming divisions of the three console makers over the last two generations? It was from a previous newspost that doesn’t seem to exist anymore. I believe that would emphasize this point nicely.
Also, I can’t find it and I forgot to bookmark it like I do most interesting reads. It’s a nice source to have on hand.
