Every big hit game never has any hype. The game seemingly comes from nowhere. Every game largely hyped never impacts anything. The game might sell some but largely comes across as a dud. (The exception to this rule is Super Mario Brothers 3.)
The major phenomenons of this generation: World of Warcraft, Wii Sports, and Wii Fit didn’t have massive hype (Wii Fit had ‘anti-hype’). But they came out and took over.
Many people have imagined Super Mario Brothers 5 to have the hype of the Second Coming. And they suspect the lack of hype to mean lack of interest. Do not fall for this.
I see the lack of hype as a very good sign. Expectations are low for NSMB Wii which is why the game will likely floor people. They aren’t expecting it. Something like the Demo Play could easily change gaming for all time. No one is expecting it. And this is why I am sliding my chips on it.
As we get nearer to NSMB Wii’s release, I will hype it here because I have been waiting almost twenty years for this game. While I didn’t expect Nintendo to pin their holiday season on a 2d Mario, this is the game that needs to come out.
So I hope that you, the reader, do forgive me for indulging in the luxury of a countdown. After decades waiting for this game, I’m allowing myself this eccentricity. Let the countdown begin.
