Email: 3d seems to be no more

Malstrom! Look:

From Mario Kart 3D, they named the game Mario Kart 7
http://nintendo3dsblog.com/mario-kart-7-is-arriving-this-december

and as Kotaku pointed out in their article, this 3DS ad is emphasizing the system’s other features without mentioning the 3D screens

I think they listened to you, haha!

No, what I wanted was a version of the 3DS stripped of the 3d output and the D-pad and circle pad reversed in position. They could call it the ‘SDS’ (Super DS) or something else. It would still play 3DS games but with zero 3d output. And it would be priced $100 cheaper than the 3DS (I was thinking $150ish). With the latest price drop, it appears such hypothetical hardware could be priced around $110.

And then they would have to put out traditional Gameboy type games, not this ‘OMG, its 3d! Let’s fly around! Whoooo…’ type games.

Putting out new hardware is hard. But 3DS without the 3d and more traditional Gameboy/DS games is what I think everyone wants.

Mario Kart 7 is a weird name. Who came up with that? Mario Kart names have always been about the system it is on (since Mario Kart only appears one per system). Super Mario Kart, i.e. Super Nintendo. Mario Kart 64, i.e. Nintendo 64. Mario Kart Advance, i.e. Gameboy Advance. Mario Kart DS and Wii, DS and Wii. I don’t know what the hell went on with Mario Kart: Double Dash.

But Mario Kart 7? This doesn’t work. Numerals work for games like Super Mario Brothers and Zelda and Metroid because they are sequels. Mario Kart is more akin to a sports game. It is Madden 2010, not Madden 15. If Madden only came out once per console, it would be called Madden Genesis. Madden PlayStation. Madden Xbox.

I don’t like the Mario Kart 7 brand. Mario Kart 3DS works much better. Why would they take 3DS out of the brand? Is Nintendo going to release a 3DS without 3d? Is Nintendo prepared to distance itself from 3d?

That commercial is true the 3d output of the screens is not talked about. At the end, the commercial says, “This is not DS. This is… 3DS!” Perhaps the reason for not mentioning the 3d is to establish that the 3DS is a new handheld system and not an iteration.
