Have you sen the new trailer for Kirby’s Return to Dreamland? I know Kirby’s not your thing, but look at the backgrounds, environments, effects, and powerups…that’s what a 2D platformer looks like when it gets the first-tier treatment by Nintendo. And it makes it all the more apparent that 2D Mario is regarded as a second-tier game by Nintendo. Or maybe Miyamoto is hoping that by phoning in 2D Mario, he’ll stop being forced to make it. Of course, even on the N64, Kirby still remained a 2D platformer.

I don’t think he phoned in Super Mario Brothers 5. I think the problem with Miyamoto is that he has gotten lost too much in the game mechanics and forgot about the actual content of the game. I want to see more exploration of the Mushroom Kingdom, not just regurgitated parts of old games with new game mechanics. The new exploration of the Mushroom Kingdom will give new content to Mario Kart for tracks and Mario RPGs for their content.
What I suspect Nintendo is trying to do is what they did during the 16-bit Era. Instead of making Super Mario Brothers 5, Miyamoto had Rare make three Donkey Kong Country games to ‘handle the 2d platformer crowd’. But what we wanted was Mario 5.
If Miyamoto cannot replace 2d Mario with 3d Mario, it appears he will try to replace 2d Mario with 2d Kirby or 2d Donkey Kong. Bad Miyamoto. We know what we want, and you cannot stop Nintendo from making more 2d Mario because the market demands it. Well, you can, but consider the price. Preventing 2d Mario to be made now will be destroying your reputation. There will be no legend ‘developer’. Gamers will despise you. No game developer will look up to you. They will only see a selfish bitter old man, who for some inconceivable reason, is preventing an extremely popular game everyone wants to play.
Anyway, after the music post above, I am on vacation. Bye all!
