Attention Nintendo: Comparing 3DS momentum to DS will set you up for epic failure

Dear Nintendo,

Please stop comparing launch aligned DS sales to 3DS sales and saying, “3DS is selling faster than the DS did at this point in time.” (DS didn’t start selling in the US until DS Lite and NSMB DS came out) I know you are desperate to show that the 3DS has ‘momentum’, but you are setting yourselves up for a public relations disaster.

Why?

If you keep comparing the 3DS to DS and saying “3DS is selling more than the DS did at this point in time [not mentioning how bad DS originally sold at first but giving people a false impression that the DS always sold well], you will be forced to compare the Wii U to the Wii.

And you don’t want to do that.

Comparisons of the 3DS and DS will only force comparisons of the Wii U and Wii. Wii was sold out in the United States for almost three years. The Wii U will not be as fortunate. In fact, no console should want to compare itself to Wii’s sales because it’s a losing comparison. It is like comparing yourself to an Olympics athlete.

Just because it feels good now to make announcements to the press that 3DS is selling faster than the DS did being launch aligned, you will be asked by the press to compare Wii U momentum to Wii momentum. And the Wii U momentum will not be like the Wii momentum.

“How do you know that, Malstrom?” asks a reader. “Maybe Wii U will do better than the Wii!”

Oh, reader. You make me laugh.
