Microsoft is telling us where they are going.
Xbox 720 has been the favorite to ‘win’ in North America in the Eighth Generation. But this makes the dangerous assumption that the Xbox 720 will perform the same level of gaming experience that the Xbox 360 did and do it better. Examples of ‘doing it better’ would be a Xbox 360 that doesn’t get a red ring of death or a controller with a great D-pad.
But we’re all forgetting that Microsoft is not a gaming company. And Microsoft can only ‘innovate’ with gaming by slapping on PC gaming features to a dumbed down junior PC. Instead of adopting more features from PC gaming, it appears Microsoft wants the Xbox to be a general entertainment brand.
And they want it to be the Kinect Box.
You know, it is very possible that Wii U could win in the eighth generation due to Microsoft and Sony committing suicide. Both Microsoft and Sony are not just giant companies but giant companies in decline. Since when has a company in decline ever made a great game console? PlayStation came at the tail end of the Sony golden era. Xbox, interstingly, also came at the tail end of Microsoft’s golden era.
Wii U could outsell everything by default. Until we know what the Xbox 720 and PS4 are, and what their prices are, we can’t compare anything. You cannot compare a real console to imaginary consoles with imaginary price points.
But why is every game console focusing on non-gaming elements like ‘movies’ or ‘Youtube’? Give me REAL GAMES like Wii Sports or Brain Age or Wii Fit. Expect the hardcore who declared these games to be ‘non-games’ get all excited by actual non-gaming such as ‘movie playback’ and ‘youtube’.
