I stumbled across this the other day. When you originally posted about the fifth console, I was thinking that’s all well and good in the PC world, because keyboards and mice are still around from decades ago so with a little software emulation, you can continue to play classics and have them compete with new stuff. However, when it comes to trying to enjoy classic portable console stuff, that isn’t so easy, because there really isn’t any portable device that continues to get manufactured with a dpad as its basic control and thus can easily emulate old software like the PC and its keyboard and mouse. Trying to use touch screen dpads on mobiles or tablets suck.
This seems like a good attempt at keeping portable hardware and the dpad alive:
