Email: Master of Orion: Where did the Orions go?

Hello again, master Malstrom,

I’ve been still playing Master of Orion, and, having my pitiful enemy cornered in his last planet, decided to completely max our my research, stockpile a bunch of ships, and smash the Darklock Emperor thoroughly. I have control of Orion, but something odd is happening, and I’m not sure if it’s a bug. Orion has a max population of 300 million, due to my complete terraforming research, but whenever I go above a certain level, the entire planet depopulates.
I am going to try to coordinate my transports to completely populate the planet in one turn, since if it’s a bug I think it might have something to do with trying to increase population beyond a certain level (only Orion can become this populated as far as I know.)

But the nature of it makes me think that it might not be a bug. The Orions(or Orios or whatever) follow the archetype of the super-advanced ancient alien race that mysteriously disappeared (much like Star Control’s Precursors). For their homeworld to suddenly depopulate actually adds to the mystery of the game and makes it more interesting to me (I remember you mentioning something similar some time ago, with -1 world.) So I was wondering, do you know anything about this? Is it a bug? A Google check brought up nothing.

No one knows.

I think the Orions come back in Master of Orion 3 and take over the galaxy. I’ve been warned not to play MOO 3, so I cannot say anymore than that.
