Wii Sales Are Spawning More Wii Sales

An email:

My daughters are leaving home next month and, guess what, they want to take the Wii with them. Well, they can’t both have it. In fact they can’t either of them have it, because it is mine and I want to keep it.

Nintendo don’t even need to market it to them – it is sold already.

That’s two more sales for Nintendo, and is something you don’t see with the PS360. When your boy (it is always a boy) leaves home he takes his PS360 with him and, frankly, you are glad to see the back of it.

And that consequence of the Wii being a family machine just doesn’t seem to have been noticed. Rough-cutting the numbers, I’d guess that at least 2/3 of Wiis have sold to families, and that each of those families will spawn a further 1.5 Wiis over the next 5 years. That’s an extra 30m Wiis.

That would mean roughly that Nintendo could stop all marketing right now and still outsell the Xbox 360 over the next five years.

That should scare somebody!

Young women buying their own Wii systems!? Makes me wish I was in college.

Like an avalanche, the Wii doesn’t stop. It just snowballs larger and larger and larger!
