Reggie said that Virtual Console was saving titles to release should there be a drought. Well, VC has certainly been on fire lately especially with the latest release of Secret of Mana. When one really views how many games are available on VC, one has to realize that there are tons of titles. Virtual Console gets the most important thing right: it is consistent in putting up new games. This has built into quite a nice library.
I’ve joked that Virtual Console is like a ‘heaven’. Our poor old games, if they behaved well in their former life, are granted immortality on the Virtual Console. How Legend of Kage and Urban Champion appeared there is a mystery. But no one would disagree that the Super Mario Brothers or Zelda or other greats should be forgotton in the past. No. They need to be sold forever. I want today’s products to compete with the classics. If today’s games can’t beat twenty year old titles, then today’s games don’t deserve to sell.
Like everyone, I have my own list of games I want to see appear. Or, rather, I want games up so I can not play the old systems anymore. Here is my top 5:
1) Super Mario Kart
I could literally play this game forever. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it. To have this game on VC, to be able to access it any time without the cartridge, fills me with joy. I hope I can still finish Special Cup on 150cc. That was tough.
2) Blaster Master
This fantastic classic is a mix of tank jumping action and dungeon like gameplay. This needs to come out.
3) Life Force
People may complain there are too many shooters. But shooters were popular back then which is why so many were made. But the only major shooter, aside from Gradius 2, that needs to come out is the NES Life Force. This is one of the best NES games. And this shooter is more imaginative and fun than any of the shooters on VC now including the Soldier Blade series. It is two player co-op too which is something more shooters should have done.
4) Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, etc.
Come on, Square. These games have no value to you anymore. Let them go.}
5) Guardian Legend
This is a shooter mixed in with a zelda… sorta. It is a classic. It needs to come out.
I would also love to see Double Dragon 2 and Shadowgate.
