Thirty years ago, a group of visionaries created Pong and sparked a video game revolution. The baton has been passed, from one generation to the next, from Atari to Nintendo to Sega to Sony and so on through the ages with each company progressing gaming in their own way. Here, on this website, now, I get the opportunity to dream the next dream, a way to drive the next wave of growth and opportunity for not just one particular console but for everyone with a console and everyone without. And, of course, to change our industry.
People ask me, “Can you disrupt Nintendo?” I tell them, “Of course I can.” Indeed, controllers will continue to evolve as we have seen with guitars, wands, nunchucks, and cameras. But here’s the problem. For too many people, the console is a barrier separating video game players from everyone else. With this in mind, I ask myself a new set of questions. “Can we go beyond the console? Can we deliver games and entertainment that everyone can instantly enjoy? Instead of making someone the controller, can we make everywhere around you the game?”
We can.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are excited to share with you Project Malstrom. Project Malstrom is a codename for our revolutionary new way to play where the only experience you need is truth experience. What you saw was a small glimpse of all kinds of experiences Project Malstrom will enable. With glasses with special lens that sees 3d shapes and movements all around you, this is the holodeck we have all dreamed would come.
When it launches, Project Malstrom will work with every housesold and every house that will sell in the future. We can leap into the new era of interactive entertainment without having to sell a console.
The question that we must ask is how interactive entertainment can be as approachable as all other forms of entertainment. Everyone loves books and music, and everyone loves movies, but the vast majority of people are too intimated to play video games through a television. And despite the size of the industry, still 60% of households do not own a video game console. I have always agreed that the only way to bring interactive entertainment to everybody is to make the technology invisible. And, then we can shine the spotlight where it belongs: on you and the fun you can have with technology that recognizes not only your thumbs and wrists and skeletons but your entire being. Ever since I saw Project Malstrom, I dramatically felt like I was present for a historic moment, a moment as significant as the square shaped movie screen to cinema-scope and then Imax. So, as a creator, I could envision a new way of personalizing gameplay, the gameplay experience, to make it possible to change the paradigm of story telling and social interaction. And I think what Project Malstrom is doing is not removing the wheel, it is letting us fly instead of being stuck in a car.
A revolutionary way to play, a new era of interactive entertainment, a new world of possibilities!
Forget High Definition consoles… Project Malstrom will have graphics all AROUND you! Forget motion controlled Wii… Project Malstrom will have you interacting and moving like never before. Forget Project Natal… Project Malstrom is the freaking Holodeck! Our sci-fi future has finally come!
Now, it is time for questions.
Mr. Malstrom, how much will Project Malstrom cost and when will it be out?
Project Malstrom will be out when it is ready to be out. The cost will be very affordable.
We demand specifics.
Like I said, it will be out when it is ready to be out. It will be affordable. Next question, please.
Mr. Malstrom, do you believe Project Malstrom will change the game industry as we know it?
Oh, yes. However, it will do more than that. Project Malstrom will change more than the industry, it will change our very souls. Project Malstrom will alter the course of human civilization. Next question!
Should Nintendo be worried about Project Malstrom?
Nintendo should just exit the console business and only make games on Project Malstrom. In fact, I think you should ask them how doomed they are in every interview you have with them. You know you can never ask that too many times. Just know that Project Malstrom has disrupted the disruptor!
Have you received word from Iwata or Reggie?
No, but their silence is understandable. They are obviously in awe of Project Malstrom. They know that Project Malstrom is the future and are greatly worried about their business with something like Project Malstrom stealing the market.
Should Sony be worried about Project Malstrom?
Of course! Sony just can’t compete anymore. I mean, what is Blu-Ray compared to the holodeck? Next question.
Should Microsoft be worried about Project Malstrom?
Indeed. Look, Project Natal INSPIRED Project Malstrom! I learned that one doesn’t have to set a price or a launch date, have software, or even give the tech demo a name! So before you criticize me, examine Microsoft and its Natal. I am only following in their path. Next question.
The tech demo you showed… do the creators know that it will be used in Project Malstrom?
Project Malstrom is so secretive that not even the creators of the technology know that it will be used with my current plans. Do you have any other questions?
Just one more: Seeing how you have never released any successful game console and apparently have no plans on ever releasing it, why should we care about Project Malstrom?
Details! Please, now, I want you to IMAGINE all the gameplay possibilities with the holodeck. Forget about price. Forget about release date. Forget about all those things. IMAGINE and just dream… dream about a magical utopia of gaming… Then you will know that the future belongs to Project Malstrom.
Thank you everyone! And thank you for seeing The Future.
