There is a reason why this company is having financial difficulties. Good God.
“The Nintendo market is pretty humongous right now, but I think that’s primarily because of all the light users; the casual users,” he said, speaking to Gamasutra. “The core userbase for the Wii is really still small. One of the things that Nintendo is trying to do, like with the Motion Plus, is try to make it more advanced and more friendly to the gamer-gamer.
“But it’s still not enough because Sony and Microsoft are starting to do the same sorts of technology. In those cases they are still weak, but I think it’s really important to have more core titles such as Zelda and other titles from Nintendo to grow that core market area, so the whole market can grow as well.”
Where do you begin with this? Let us try.
1) Calls the Expanded Market ‘Casual Gamers’ which is a nice way of saying ‘retarded gamers’. While this is a common fallacy, let us continue.
2) Motion-Plus is aimed to get the ‘real gamer’? Oh really? I thought the real gamer hated motion controls. They certainly were not pleased with Motion Plus at E3 2008 when it was unveiled.
3) Sony and Microsoft are going to get the ‘core’ market with motion controls. Really? First, they have to actually put out a product and get people to buy it in some quantity. This is harder than it seems. But the ‘core gamers’ despise motion controls. Why does everyone assume the ‘core’ will jump up for it? I think there is going to be nasty infighting with core gamers and the motion controls for the HD twins. Remember, Microsoft and Sony’s motion controls are perfect right now because they do not exist. No customer has played with them. But one day they will. And I guarantee that it will not be “perfect” because nothing that exists is perfect.
4) Nintendo needs to grow the ‘Core’ Market? How is this even possible? Nintendo cannot reverse the population trends of Japan and Europe.
5) Nintendo has been remaking their ‘core’ games and all it led them was decreased marketshare. See, oh, the last fifteen years.
6) Nintendo has released many of its ‘core’ games on the Wii. Successors to all the Gamecube hits from Mario Kart to Smash Brothers to 3d Mario have all been made.
7) Why is this guy complaining about Zelda? Zelda was released for the Wii in the launch of the system. You might say that it was developed for the ‘Gamecube’ but, yet, a new Zelda was released for the Wii. Why is he complaining for Nintendo to release a game that has already been released?
If Nintendo could grow the ‘Core Market’, they wouldn’t have bothered to make the DS and Wii in the first place. The old ways of ‘more graphics’ and ‘more processors’ were reaching a deadend so Nintendo zagged to shift from output to input.
The comments act as if Nintendo had a choice of two buttons to pick, ‘core’ or ‘expanded’, and Iwata said, “Yeah, screw the Core. Let’s keep hitting that Expanded button’.
Some people may like Marvelous Entertainment’s games, but when it comes to why the Wii’s market is what it is, Marvelous is clueless.
