Email: Music

But I just want to say, that your new music category is awesome. I
think, in modern games music and sound in general is heavily
underestimated. All the focus lies on the visuals. But when I look
back at some of first 3D games like Unreal on the PC or the Zelda
games on the N64, they knew how to create an amazing atmosphere just
with the sole help of music and ambient sounds. But now we have good
enough graphics, so a lot of developers don’t seem to care about sound
(and sometimes even gameplay) anymore. So, thanks for your new
category, I’m really looking forward to it.

I agree with you in just how great music was in the older games. This doesn’t mean new games don’t make great music, some do, but think of the hurdles the early games had. Games weren’t even on CDs until the latter 16-bit generation.

Graphics age.

Gameplay gets rusty.

But the music is eternal! The music, even in old games, doesn’t sound aged at all. The limitations of sound quality at that time gives it a more unique sound, but it is still fun to listen.

I just have to restrain myself from pumping out tons of ‘music’ posts. I’m limiting myself to one a day.

I think music is one of the big pieces of the game, perhaps the most important piece, that makes the game ‘magical’.
