One of the greatest chiptunes ever made. While the Great Gianna Sisters is definitively a Super Mario Brothers rip-off, it became popular enough in Germany as well as in other countries. While the gameplay was copied, Great Gianna Sisters also introduced some new gameplay that wasn’t in Super Mario Brothers.
But the game did utilize Super Mario Brother’s Alice in Wonderland theme as well as having fantastic music. I think the success of Great Gianna Sisters should reveal that Mario, himself, is not why people like Super Mario Brothers. While gameplay is important, the real experience was the content which the Alice in Wonderland theme really comes through. The protagonists being girls brings the parallel even closer than Super Mario Brothers did.

A new Gianna Sisters game is coming to the DS. It looks more fun than most of any new games coming out these days. That Alice in Wonderland theme never gets old.
