The Old School are, indeed, returning. When I went to buy my copy of Super Mario Brothers 5, I went to Target since that is the place that opens first around where I am at. Lo and behold, more people were waiting as I arrived.
I got Wii Sports Resort at launch and there was really no one who came when the store opened. The last time I remember people arriving when the store opened were for games like Wii Fit and World of Warcraft.
People like myself don’t bother to preorder the game. We just get it as soon as the store opens. Who wants to go through Gamestop?
Naturally, I had to find the red shirt Target dude and get him to give us our games. And just as naturally, he denied any game was coming out. But we ganged up on him and he relented and went back and got out the copies.
While he was getting the game, I asked some questions to this crowd. I asked them when was the last time they got a game at launch. “I never do this,” one person said. “Wii Fit” said another.
There were many ladies that showed up. If the reader happens to be a hardcore gamer and needs translation, lady gamers mean the other gender. The young ladies told me how they adore old school Mario and don’t like 3d Mario (its true, they said this!). I asked them more questions. They also said they like the Wii because it is simple, and it fits them better. They complained the PS3 had too many buttons and was too complicated.
I declared, “After this game, we are going to have to wait eighteen years for a new Mario game!” They all laughed.
Fans of a game series of 18 years ago. And they show up on day one.
This is going to be big.
