Wow, I had completely forgotten about that battle stage. Even when searching on youtube I could only find the normal stage. I remember now how this one was not as good so we would finish it quickly to get back to the other one.
The reason I didn’t mention Yoshi’s Island is because I didn’t even know about it at the time! I guess that goes to show how much Nintendo failed with that title. I only played it around 1999 when I was into emulators. My thoughts on it were that it was pretty good, but collecting was useless because the levels were way too long, which makes them a chore to go through and not something you want to replay. Needless to say, the DS game was quite a disappointment.
The reason I wrote again though is that I think the reason why people don’t understand how we can see a difference between 2D and 3D Mario and why we left console gaming for PC gaming is that we don’t give them enough concrete information they could relate to.
I wrote something today, a sort of summary of gaming through my eyes over the years and I think it shows how we felt when Nintendo and Sega had in our eyes killed Mario and Sonic. It also shows my transition to PC, my transition back to consoles and how I got bored, only to be reeled back in by Nintendo with the Wii and DS. I also find it funny how consoles matched my school progression.
I hope it can help more people understand why we make such a big deal out of this.
Oh and the reason I’m not playing the game right now is because I didn’t think to take a day off from work for it… 2PM can’t come soon enough.

Read his blog post. It very well summarizes the change in many gamers who left the Nintendo platform around the SNES and N64 eras. It also highlights that Golden Age for PC gaming in the early 90s. PC gaming was moving off of DOS and into Windows, all games were having mouse support, 3d graphics, Internet, LAN, and the birth of FPS and RTS. The problem with Golden Ages is that you never realize you are in them at the time.
