The Scope of Gaming Before the ‘Industry’

749 NES games in 15 minutes.

This was before the Industry. After the first Game Industry destroyed gaming after the Crash of 1983, gaming came back to consoles from Japan and ports from PC games (such as the Commodore 64).

There was no such thing as ‘franchise’. They were game series. But no one spoke the word ‘franchise’.

There wasn’t even something called ‘genre’ in gaming. Games were more associated by the content. Sports games would be about sports. A space shooter game could be equally a space shooter and a Zelda experience (Guardian Legend). A tank game could be equally about platforming and exploring in mazes (Blaster Master). There was no definition of gaming so there was no frame on what a video game was.

As time went on, as the Industry grew up to become more powerful, there are less and less genres. Every game is placed in a cookie cutter frame. People talk about gaming only in nonsense terms such as ‘franchises’ and all. The big innovations in gaming today come only from outside the Industry.
