Email: A different opinion on DK…

Hey Malstrom –

Just read your update on DKCR.  Or should I say, a really silly email.  I kind of think whoever wrote that is trying to hit the curve on “hate” since as far as I can tell, nothing would really please them.  Like bosses getting faster isn’t something that bosses should do…
I digress.

I found the game to be imperfect, but definitely not without a lot of fun factor.  My criticisms are basically the same as your own actually.

1)  No changeable characters.

2)  I kind of am sick of using the Wiimote on its side.  Let me use the classic controller.

3)  Kind of pointless cutscenes (but thankfully skippable, so not really an issue).

Major pluses for this game:

1)  Multiplayer:  I dunno what that one emailer was smoking, but two players was a lot of fun.  I had a blast playing it with my little cousins (and I’m mid 20s).

2)  Difficulty:  Not dumbed down for idiots.

3)  It felt like DK Country.  I dunno what your opinion of the original is completely (I sort of got a gist of it in one of your posts), but the game really is a sequel to the old DK Country games.  Like the minilevels, coin collection, the carts, the barrels, and even the rhino.  I’m not all the way through it yet, but I feel sort of compelled to finish playing it.  That isn’t a feeling I get very often.  So it must be a good game.  Perhaps not the best game EVAR!!!, but good nonetheless.

The complaint about the controls keep reappearing. I also see complaints about only having Rambi to ride, and he isn’t around much. What happened to the other animals?

The most interesting complaint is that people prefer the Kremlings to the Tiki in DKCR. I think this is interesting. I wouldn’t be surprised if Retro completely scrapped the Kremlings so they could ‘do their thing’ with DKC. People’s complaint about the Tiki is that they don’t really seem evil and make the game feel more like a nature walk instead of battling The Evil Empire.

Just as in comic books, a good hero needs a good villain. Mario didn’t become popular in his games until he was paired against Bowser. With Link, it is Ganon. With Samus Aran, it is Mother Brain. The Kremlings of Donkey Kong Country were OK if imperfect. But they seem more ‘bad guy’ than the Tiki.

You know who would be the most interesting villain to oppose Donkey Kong?

Mario.

The readers gasp. “But Mario is a hero, Malstrom! How on Earth can you cast him as a villain!?”

Did you not play Donkey Kong Jr.? It would be funny for Donkey Kong to smash Toads and retaliate against Hunter Mario.

Perhaps Mario makes a poor villain. Anyway, an evil type of villain is necessary.

Above: Kremling love. Gotta love Diddy’s groovy dance at the end.
