It exists in Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, wherein the second player is locked into Ryu (similar to the Mario Kart example). I don’t know if it’s featured in any other launch titles (as you noted, there aren’t enough with multiplayer), but at the very least it is possible, even with a ported HD twin game. I expect Mario Kart 3DS will have more or less the same download play functionality as Mario Kart DS.
I expected every Nintendo system to launch with a (2d) Super Mario Brothers game since they always kept selling. And look what happened to me! (cries) Next thing I know, the President of Nintendo and Miyamoto laugh at me by saying the ‘business model’ that says the console is a box people buy in order to get to Super Mario Brothers is no longer valid.
I expected Nintendo to come out with more motion control games for the Wii outside of Wii Sports. What a fool I was!
So don’t have any expectations from Nintendo. They prefer to choose the lazy way when it comes to replayability and content and opt for the easy way of gimmicks. 3DS download play is ‘too hard’. It will likely just be a Shy guy and one track. Might as well not even include it.
