Women control the fate of Nintendo


The future of Nintendo depends highly on women. Much of the DS and Wii new audience are women. All those dance games being sold on the Wii is due to women. Wii Fit sold due to women. Women absolutely love Mario Kart and Wii Sports. Women also love 2d Mario.

Nintendo’s core market, in the Sixth Generation, was described as children or ‘kiddies’. But Nintendo’s core market, in the Seventh Generation, became filled with women gamers.

It is well known to marketers that women control like 85% of all discretionary spending (in all markets for all products). The reason why Wii found its way into many homes is because a woman wanted it there. Husbands and boyfriends will attest that it is easy to get a woman to play the Wii with them. Wii is also good for local multiplayer which women seem to love (you don’t see too many women focused on Internet multiplayer that isn’t World of Warcraft).

“But Malstrom, you said much of Nintendo depends on getting back the Old School audience.”

I did say that.

“But now you are talking about women gamers.”

And what is your point?

“Get it straight. It is either old school gamers or women.”

Ahh, why you do separate women from old school gaming? Old school gaming is characterized as Robotron and Mortal Kombat. Old school gaming is actually Pac-Man and Super Mario Brothers.

Most women tend to fall under the ‘Old School Gamer’ banner.

The 3DS could be pushing away women. Nintendogs sales are highly dependent on women. If a game like Street Fighter 4 ends up remaining the ‘main game’ in America for 3DS, that might indicate it is men who are buying the 3DS and not women. Women are now part of the Nintendo’s core market. If Nintendo does not convince them on the 3DS, there can only be a drop from the DS.
