3DS and its software is not ‘too expensive’

People say that a problem with the 3DS and its games is that it is too expensive. Once the price is lowered, it is said, sales will take off.

This was said about the PlayStation 3 as well.

Let’s look at the PS3. Was the PS3 overpriced? Gamers will say, “Yeah, man! $599 is too much, man! Too much!”

But from Sony’s point of view, where they were selling the PS3 at a loss, the PS3 was not overpriced. PS3 included all sorts of things like a Blu-Ray player.

The issue was not the price. The issue was the value. The price was out of sync with the true value of the market. And the same is true with the 3DS.

The reason why 3DS and its software seem so expensive is that people do not value it. Lowering the price would help, but the 3DS has a value problem, not a high price problem.

If Sony was actually decent at making a handheld, Nintendo could be roadkill. I imagine Microsoft is kicking themselves for not getting into the handheld business now. The 3DS weakness could be the smell of blood to entice the Microsoft shark.
