Email: Rescue Rangers and other kid’s games

Hi Malstrom

Those suggestions you made for that other guy were really interesting. I instantly downloaded (sorry, never had a NES) Rescue Rangers. I loved that cartoon when I as little, I could write forever just about Rescue Rangers, but that’s not why I’m writing this email.

I was really surprised, how fun and well made Rescue Rangers was. The controls were certainly not Nintendo quality, but everything else was really well done. Even without the Rescue Rangers license it would have been a good game. I haven’t gotten very far though, just made it to the spaceship boss, but I will come back. Playing the game co-op with my brother is so much fun, it has all the cool elements from Mario 5, such as jumping on each other, picking the other player up and throwing him.
I went ahead and downloaded the sequel, as well as Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck (loved that cartoon as well, so great). Those games too were really good. Darkwing Duck seems to be somewhat harder, but I did manage to get to Quackerjack (It’s playtime!). I only tried out a few levels in Duck Tales.

The reason why I am so surprised is that children’s games, especially licensed ones, are somewhere between mediocre and bad. Seeing actually good ones from the past just made me realize how much gaming has fallen. Truly the industry has no interest to cater to children; after all children do not understand high art, so just make something quick, those little bastards will buy it anyway, right?

Back in the day, people considered ‘Super Mario Brothers’ to be nothing but a kids game. When people say games used to be ‘better’, we’re talking in a broad point of view. Like in the NES era, even the kid’s games like Ducktales were very well done. With the 16-bit Generation, it seemed as if things began to ‘industrialize’ and games became ‘franchises’. Then from there out, we end up with the ‘Industry’.

One NES game to look into, also made by Capcom, is Little Nemo the Dream Master.
