Email: Nintendo’s new declaration of war against Apple?

Hello Sean

After seeing the Wii U at the conference and some videos around the web. I agree with some points you mentioned but I still have my reservations because no real games are in playable form, only demos to illustrate the concept behind the console. And the other videos shown are just in videos, not actual gameplay, so in my part I cannot judge too harshly as you have done. I will judge only when actual games are in playable form that I can judge if this direction was good or not. However, so far it’s a mixed bag. Could be good or bad depending on the games they will put. And until the launch date, they can change direction. Probably because of how badly the 3DS is doing they showed off their console to see what they can do before the actual launch instead of realizing the mistake after the system is at stores.Who knows.

Well, however, it brought my interest while watching the video of the Wii U controller and console, and looked kind of Apple-like (like an iPad interacting with an Apple TV), more than a PSVita interacting with a Playstation 3 (which could happen). Coul it be that Nintendo has set their sights to Apple in a way thay have blinded themselves from their purpose to fight disinterest?. I have seen the latest announcements from apple and looks like they are aiming to integrate entertainment to their systems, not just games.

I know many iPad owners that either play games, or watch movies when they are in bed and the iPad has become their gadget of choice for that.

It may look like that, but it isn’t. The idea of the Project Cliche controller predates the Wii. After the success of the DS and figuring out the Revolution’s controller, the idea that almost won out was a DS-like controller with a touchscreen.

The question is: “Why is Nintendo recycling this old idea? Where is all that R&D money going?” It has to be going into the 3d output home console. Wii U is a stopgap until that.
