You know, I almost bought a Wii.
It was Christmas, I saw the Wii bundled with SMB5 at a modest price and I could suddenly see myself owning one. I pictured how much fun it would be to play Super Mario again with my brother, like we did twenty years ago.
But I held back, I said to myself “Ok, Nintendo, give me a Megaman, a Zelda, maybe an ActRaiser and I’m all yours.” I was but a small nudge away from being a loyal Nintendo customer again. But that nudge never came, and my interest quickly faded.
How obtuse is Nintendo? All they had to do was put out a few more old-school games. THAT’S ALL THEY HAD TO DO! It couldn’t have been simpler. There was a big crowd of us old-school gamers on platter, and they just waved us away. I was surprised to hear that Nintendo was going to reveal their next console, because I thought they hadn’t even tapped half of the potential of the current one. They could’ve focused on the Wii for a few more years and gotten people like me hooked with a bunch of games with old-school values. Then put out a new console built around the same values and we would’ve all flocked over.
Welcome to my world.

I still think a New! Legend of Zelda game would go over very big and cause great excitement. I don’t care if it appears on handheld or home console, just so long as it appears. As the Wii comes down in price, I think it is worth picking up. Aside from Mario 5, you have games like Wii Sports and Mario Kart Wii which are excellent. You also have the Virtual Console that has many titles.
I actually plan to eventually own a Wii in every room in my house. And on each Wii, there will be Super Mario Brothers. So no matter which room of the house I go into, I will always have a Mario game waiting. The issue has been on which Mario game goes into which room. Mario 5 goes in the living room because of its multiplayer. Super Mario Brothers goes into the kitchen because it is short enough where I won’t burn anything while being distracted. Mario All-Stars perhaps goes in the bedroom because it is full of awesome. The Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2 goes in the bathroom because it is the most frustrating. I still haven’t figured a room for all the Mario games yet. (It is fun to be eccentric.)

Right now is a good time to pick up a DS before Nintendo forces that from the market. DS systems are going to be GOLD decades from now. As you’ve been playing the SNES for so long, you KNOW how much value a good system can build up!
