Evolution of the DS

In 2004, Nintendo announced the DS.

This was pretty cool! It had two screens! The bottom screen was a touch screen. There was a microphone on the DS as well as Wi-Fi (could play multiplayer wirelessly).

In 2006, Nintendo released a revision to the DS called DS Lite.

This was pretty cool too. While it unfortunately lost the ‘tank’ toughness of the original DS, it had a slick aesthetic and very bright screens. It sold very well.

In 2009, the DSi was launched. It lost the Gameboy Advance capability, but added two cameras, memory storage, and emphasis on an online shop.

Later, in 2009, Nintendo released the DS XL…

The DS XL was a giant freaking DS! It was meant for more home play.

In 2011, Nintendo released another DS system called the 3DS.

Like those stickers from childhood that simulate 3d by combining two different planes of perspective, Nintendo is convinced everyone wants to watch Hollywood movies on this thing (as well as play games).

But the 3DS has not been the latest DS announced.

The reader looks confused.

Oh yes, you must have missed the latest DS announcement.

“But what is it, Malstrom? Oh, do tell me!”

Very well. Introducing…

DS U!

At E3 2011, Nintendo introduced the DS U. While Nintendo keeps calling it the new home console, no one else agrees. Perhaps because its true name is the DS U.

Everyone has been wanting to play DS games at home on your big TV screen. With the DS U, you finally can!

The gameplay elements of the DS U are exactly like the DS. The top screen is the television while the bottom screen is on your controller.

“What can the DS U do that the DS cannot?” asks the reader. This is a very good question!

Since the screens are separate, the bottom screen can now be overlapped on the top screen to interact with it.

Pictured Above: Amazing new innovation! A Game changer! You can overlap the bottom screen of the DS over the top screen!

And since the DS U is connected to the TV, you can use other controllers with it! Such as the Wii controllers! Wow!

Pictured Above: DS U can offer new gameplay experiences when combined with home game console controllers such as the Wii-motes.

Of course, the DS U offers the gameplay you’ve come to know and love on the regular DS.

Pictured Above: A familiar site! You can use the bottom screen (now on the controller) as inventory selection like you could with DS games. But now, the top screen is your television set! Isn’t that so cool!?

Pictured Above: With NSMB DS, you could play blissfully no matter what a person did with the TV. But with the DS U, you can switch to playing NSMB on the big screen TV when people are not using it for superior mediums such as baseball or other game consoles.

The DS U does everything, gameplay wise, that the DS does! But now it is a home version of the DS! The DS U makes the DSi XL look like a tiny bug in comparison!

Surprisingly, no one has asked for DS ports to the DS U. But I am sure they will come since the DS U can play every DS game made!

Pictured Above: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games will be playable on the DS U! Isn’t that so exciting, reader!? Technology of 2006 will be available on the new home-locked handheld DS system! Nintendo is so on the cutting edge!

“But why aren’t people excited about this amazing evolution of the DS, Malstrom?”

It is because Nintendo blundered at the E3 2011 Conference. Some idiot put the label as ‘Wii U’ instead of ‘DS U’. Nintendo keeps saying a new home console was announced but no one believes them! Perhaps it is because people saw a home based handheld system instead.
