E3 2005, Sony tells us that the PS3 is going to be powered by diamonds and cost eight billion dollars. A few years later…well, you know the story. Nothing that a little “coming in third place for quite a while” and “your network getting hacked” can’t fix. I dare say it’s made them a bit more of a consumer-friendly company. They must be doing something not completely wrong these days, if they’ve got you saying nice things about the PSP!
I expect Sony to do things much better with Vita than with the PSP. Many of the previous errors of the PSP will be corrected with the Vita.
But the Vita will have a tepid market performance. Despite that, it will be extremely competitive with the 3DS (which has a tepid market performance currently). I think it is far more probable for Vita to ‘suddenly become popular’ than it is for the 3DS. The 3d output is a hard barrier where people like me will never be sold.
I’m not praising it so much as saying there is nothing about Vita that pisses me off. PSP pissed me off with their stupid UMD movies. There was some issue about a button and Kutaragi told anyone complaining to go to hell. And most importantly, DS was taking gaming in the correct direction. DS was taking us to more 2d Mario, more small solid games, more menu based JRPGs, and so on.
The usual barriers that keep me away from game consoles isn’t found in Vita. It still has the high price of $250 but seems like a great value compared to the $250 3DS. The game library is also very questionable. I’m keeping an eye on it.
