Developers need to become the suits

More people are realizing Pachter is a sock puppet for the Game Industry.

Analyst labels overtime as a natural part of game development; says Unions shouldn’t exist

Full-time game developers shouldn’t complain they have to work unpaid overtime, an industry analyst has said during an extraordinary outburst in defence of Australian studio Team Bondi.

Of course, Unions are a relic of the 19th Century. There is no such thing as a thriving business that is unionized. This is why no one belongs in a union today.

What the developers are arguing about is not ‘crunch time’ itself, but how ridiculously leveraged they are. When you are working harder and harder, and getting paid the same or less, you are being leveraged. This happens in pretty much every industry, not just gaming.

The solution is financial education. This will place more and more developers in the driver’s seat concerning the business instead of the ‘suits’. Why do we even have suits anyway? The only reason why the business people are in gaming is because game developers keep refusing to learn business knowledge and financial education that would make the business people obsolete forever.

Why would game developers reject the need for business and financial education? I bet many of them only want to be ‘creative’ and all that business/financial stuff is ‘icky’. The ‘creativity’ virus has not only ruined games, it has ruined the business side as well by allowing outsiders to enter and given the power to leverage developers (who are unaware because they are obsessed about their ‘creativity’).

The absolute worst thing would be unionizing. This would keep developers financially ignorant, would keep the suits in control, but would allow political machines to have control over the wages and content. The reason why you never hear about the ‘financial education’ solution is because the unionizing advocates (who are ridiculously in the wrong century) do not wish employees to be financially educated. They would lose all control. In the same way, the suits would also lose control.

I think it is thrilling that more and more game developers are choosing to leave the industry to make their own financial house. It will be a very tough education, but at least they will be free.
