We have long puzzled how console makers can become amazingly arrogant in a short amount of time. Iwata famously said, in 2006, that “Nintendo must not become arrogant.” As evident by Nintendo’s products currently, arrogance is clearly in view. (How do you enjoy paying $250 for a 3DS that scratches the screen and has hinge problems?)
Perhaps all this arrogance is to creativity as a tree is to an acorn. I have no doubt that Nintendo believes the DS and Wii success was due to their creativity where everything shows the opposite was the case. The Wii-mote was copied from the TV remote. The big hit Wii games were non-creative sports or fitness simulations such as Wii Sports or Wii Fit. And the ‘creative’ software, such as Wii Music or Metroid: Other M, bombed big time.
The ancient tradition of theater makes the audience elevated over the stage. The audience are taking the place of the gods and are given omniscience. The actors, who, even today, are never ever allowed to turn their back to the audience, offer their thoughts to the all-seeing gods that is the audience.
‘Creativity’ has usurped this ancient tradition and has turned the performers into ‘gods’. They perform whatever they please and that is the end of it. Naturally, the audience disappears because it makes no sense to give money to be treated like a servant. The reason why people give money is so they get to be ‘gods’…. if for a short time in their busy lives.
Above: Angel-like, only gods hover above the world, without being seen, and hear and witness all. The theater’s origin was for the audience to play the gods. They are elevated and look down on the performers. And when the lowly performer looks up, he sees his gods: the audience.
The actual Game Gods are the customers, never the developers or publishers. They choose which game lives and dies. They define the quality of gaming.
If a game company wishes to escape the ‘arrogance’ trap that destroys so many, try not to be creative. Out of all the suggestions thrown at the Gaming Palace, no one has had the courage to try it. Instead, people keep trying the same old ‘solutions’ thinking it will be different this time around.
