I went from a Gameboy to a DS in 2005. How much did Malstrom pay for his DS? Keep in mind, this is before the DS Lite.
The thing is that I did not buy an American DS. I imported a Japanese DS. I figured if I was going to get back into Nintendo gaming, I better do it in style. And I desired to impress my American friends with my fabulous red DS.

This is the DS I bought. It is unlike other red DS systems because it is a tank model and, unlike the American version, it is black on the bottom. Currently, I use it as an alarm clock. I like it today because this red classic DS is very uncommon in America and cannot currently be bought anywhere. I will keep it around as a symbol of the DS Revolution.

This red Japanese DS was a promotional hardware for Jump Superstars (which didn’t come out of Japan due to licensing issues). It was the Red DS in Japan that is said to be the beginning of the 2005 DS explosion. So not only is Malstrom responsible for the Wii explosion, he is an indicating customer for the Japanese DS explosion as well. My red DS sale certainly showed up in the Media Create charts.
Recently, a red 3DS has come out in Japan that has increased sales somewhat. But I’m not interested in getting that because I am not interested in a 3DS and because it is region locked (for no reason).
Here is what I find interesting. Nintendo is saying that the price drop will cause a huge sales increase in the 3DS. It will cause a sales increase, for sure, but we don’t know if it is temporary or sustained.
Due to currency exchange rate and importation, I paid around $250 for my Japanese classic DS. The price wasn’t what kept me away from handheld gaming.
