Miyamoto threw a lot of recommendations out there for game developers, many of which I would reckon he doesn’t even follow.  My favorite one? 

“We need to remember to let people play the way they want to.”

Now if only he had followed his own advice for, oh I don’t know, EVERY 3D MARIO EVER. 

Exactly.

The only way to play how we want to is to allow players to choose which controller they wish to use. The Wii was successful in large part because it allowed players to choose their controllers and opt out of the Wii-mote in so many games. The NES and old game consoles all allowed the consumer to control his experience with the choice of controllers.

This is why the Wii U will not work. This is why ‘integrated hardware and software’ is a bust.

We shouldn’t be forced to play a specific way because of the hardware design.
