At GDC 2006, before the Wii was showcased at E3, outside the doors a lone figure from the Nintendo University stood holding a sign. His was a message to the world.
He told Iwata to drop the bomb.

Above: And Iwata listened…
This was the gamer known as tactics. What does tactics think today? Let me shut up and let him speak:
Hey Malstrom,
Since getting that promotion I told you about last year, I have been excruciatingly busy! Nobody told me that making more money meant you had to do more WORK! ;) All those kids that said the boss does nothing but watch YouTube all day were full of crap! ;D
I’m slowly catching up on all your articles that I missed during the time I was busy at work (and becoming disinterested in gaming because of Nintendo’s abhorrent stupidity). I’m going backwards– reading your more recent articles first, and working my way back to last August or so (this is going to take a while!). A couple days ago, I read an article where you talked about Kirby, and how there aren’t many “Kirby fans”. Just now (which inspired me to write you again after all this time), I read the article where you express your disgust with Nintendo constantly farming out the titles that are “beneath them” to 2nd-party devs, as you fear will be the case with NLOZ.
I am not a “Kirby fan” by any means, but I do have very fond memories of the NES Kirby game. Since then, though, almost all Kirby games have been about some other crap– not the 2d platformer I loved where I could steal weapons by swallowing bad guys. Well I discovered 2 days ago that was a new Kirby game for Wii made last October called “Kirby’s Return to Dreamland”. Exactly one YouTube video later, I was ready to play it. I’m playing it now, and it is very enjoyable.
Now to tie this all together and get to my point :)
This Kirby game is about a pure old-school 2d experience as we get these days– and it’s made by good ol’ HAL Laboratories– Nintendo’s A-list. Before reading your article about Nintendo farming out titles beneath them, I was ecstatic that Nintendo chose to have HAL develop a game of this nature. Now that I think and look closely though… What the hell?? The game is really great– the production values are through the roof (far far superior to NSMB Wii in fact), and after putting 2 + 2 together via your articles I have mentioned, I am very irritated. Why does Nintendo treat friggin’ KIRBY with so much respect, and then piss all over the other characters/worlds that gamers hold much dearer? It’s so insulting I can hardly stand it…
Thanks for reading!I have not checked out the Kirby game. Perhaps I should do so. It is one of those games I intend to do along with Punchout (which I still haven’t got yet). I’ve noticed when I play a game console, I tend to binge on its games.
When I bought the Wii in 2006, I had a stack of Gamecube games to through as well (since I didn’t buy a Gamecube). So the Wii launch was a little more rich for me since I had Gamecube’s library to go through. Fantastic surprises like Ikaruga, Super Monkey Ball, F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime and Super Smash Brothers Melee awaited me.
So much depends on what Super Mario Brothers 4 is at E3 2012. If it is another 3d Mario…
