Reader, the reason why I brought up the issue of writers and how they cannot produce an interesting character that doesn’t sparkle evil and sin in some fashion was to let you see a shade of Earth with writers’ eyes. Imagine how Mozart or Beethoven would sound if you had the ears of a musician. Imagine how a musician would listen to the sounds of nature, of the birds and everything else (all of this being the motivation of why someone like Beethoven would write his symphonies). It has to be sensational. I wish I was a musician so I could hear these things with a musician’s ears. I feel there is a slice of Nature I do not have access to because I lack those type of ears.
In the same way, writers have their own unique context. When to the theme of being interesting, you have heard what writers say about how to make interesting characters. Universally, the theme is ‘flawed’. You can even see this in real life as to why bad boys are interesting while the ‘good boys’ are not. The only written work that exists where interesting isn’t created because of ‘flaws’ is the Gospels. These writers, many of which are atheists, are in awe of the work. It is one of the reasons why they consider it one of the greatest written works ever because they cannot make something like that. It is quite remarkable since it was written by fishingmen. Since the Bible is in written form, only the writers get a sense of its scope that an artist or musician wouldn’t (because it is not art or music).
In a similar way, video games are experienced differently by game developers than the usual players. In order to gain that insight, one must be a game developer. But that insight can also create a wall from truly understanding the player experience. When a game developer plays a game, they think about stuff players do not. And players get frustrated by things the game developer would overlook.
When one has the skills of craftsmanship in a trade, one can see that craft in a unique and special context that those unskilled at the craft cannot detect. A woman might look at jewels and say they are ‘pretty’, but a jeweler will say something more.
I am not saying ‘This is my opinion on this matter.’ I am saying, ‘This is what writers have said over the past half-millenia.’ Bringing up comic book characters, Mario, or Star Wars tells me that the gravity of what was being presented was not communicated.
