With Diablo 3’s release around the corner, hardcore gamer Kripparian is preparing himself. He has multiple computers, internet connections, and food all prepared. He has shaved his head. He is cramming as much sleep as possible.
The question for you, the amazing reader, is “Is this healthy?”
The answer is ‘Yes’. It is not just healthy but extremely healthy. What he is doing is the best thing he can with his life at the moment.
“But Malstrom,” some of you will say. “This is a hardcore gamer doing insane things. Isn’t that bad? I thought you mocked the hardcore.”
You might see a hardcore gamer. But what I see is a young man who has discovered what he loves to do in life and is attempting to create a business around it. Do you think multiple Internet connections or computers or extra mice is odd? It is not odd. These things are MANDATORY for many businesses.
He is also attempting to optimize his life pattern for his business (such as shaving his head at this moment). Is that any different than a salesman who goes and buys an expensive suit because he needs to impress clients? Or a businessman who buys food before hand to eat on the road to save time to get to the next appointment?
I don’t even consider him a ‘hardcore gamer’. I consider him a sort of very young businessman who has more enthusiasm than capital. He might pull it off. He might now. But he is young. At least he is trying to create a business around his passion than giving up and doing a job he hates. I find it quite inspiring actually.
Find out what your passion is in life and try to figure out how to get money by doing it. Bingo. That is what business is all about. Somehow, the assumption became made that business is about being soulless, only concerned about money, and so on. But it is the opposite. Business is about embracing your passion and serving others. Business is the most soul fulfilling thing I can think of. The people who fall for the assumption are those who have been abused by educators to believe that business is not about your passion, that business is about doing something you hate. And that is truly sad.
Anyway, about this Kripparian video, people saying this is ‘hardcore’ don’t know what is coming. It is actually quite amateur to what he probably should be doing.
“What should he be doing?”
-Rent out a building (or use a garage) where all five members of his team will be located. Have everyone in one location.
-Many more Internet lines (obviously more needed due to everyone being in one place)
-More computers, more mice, etc.
-Power generators (I live in a Hurricane area so I have several that I own. Plus, I have gasoline stored ready to use it in case electricity goes out.)
-Change the sleep time to around 2 AM to 10 AM with an 8 full hours sleep. While most users will be online during the evening, if Blizzard pulls down Battlenet for maintenance it will be when the least users are on which will be 2 AM to 10 AM.
-His trailmix diet sucks. He needs meat. Pieces of steak on a stick (e.g. shishkabob) would be great and can be eaten with one hand. The guy is an idiot when it comes to nutrition. (“They are natural sugars.” Yet, they will spike insulin levels as well. Some fruit is the worst you can eat.) Soup you can drink while playing would also be good.
-Not sure why he is worried about trips to the bathroom. Your trips to pee are not dependent on how much liquid you drink but on how much your body uses. If you were hiking or doing something athletic, you would be drinking more water and going to the bathroom less. Sitting in a chair means you won’t be doing much activity.
-Eye strain is going to be the biggest obstacle. The best way around that would be to turn the game-play time from a giant chunk to smaller bites and sleep/eat in the middle.
Let me ask the reader this. If this business venture of his succeeds as does other ‘hardcore gamers’, don’t you think the capital will be re-invested to improve his situation? What if they built an actual building dedicated to nothing but things like this? What about custom made bathrooms where there are gaming computers with every toilet seat? What about hiring employees to do things like cook for them and all?
Assuming this type of business makes money (which is a big if), this may not be ‘uber hardcore’. It may be considered ‘amateur hour’ to the things that will come in the following years/decades.
