I decided to give in and buy Diablo 3. I bought a physical copy, of course, and I was happy to see that the manual had some lore in it. It was annoying to see the DVD in a dinky little cardboard sleeve rather than an actual hard DVD case. I picked a wizard and so far I’ve just killed King Leoric. The fight was a bit fun and frantic, but frantic for the wrong reason. As I started the fight, I noticed a little grey message in the lower left corner saying the servers would shut down in 5 minutes for maintenance or something like that. I think I had 2 minutes left when I killed him (this is my first Diablo game, I’m not a speed-running pro). Then as I was talking to the fallen star-guy I kept staring at the lower left corner, hoping the servers wouldn’t shut down while the dude kept talking about falling and lost memories. Finally I made it back to New Tristram through the waypoint and exited the game. I didn’t have a chance to look at the new drops Leoric gave me, so that will be my first task when I play again.
So far it is a fun experience, and I am looking forward to unlocking more skill slots; I already knew to turn on Elective Mode thanks to message forums. I kept switching back and forth between Ray of Frost and Arcane Orb (with Magic Missle and Frost Nova as my other two skills), since the Orb was great at killing groups of skeletons but the Ray did lots of damage against a single boss monster, so with the extra slot I’ll be able to have both! I also need to read up on the crafting system, I salvaged a bunch of blue (magic?) items and I got a bunch of subtle essences but I don’t know what to do with them.
Just killed the Skeleton King? You’ve just scratched the surface of the game. The beta ended after the Skeleton King. I was surprised of how much content there was in Act 1 after it.
