Hey Sean,

according to Reggie, the hardcore are “hard to please”, it seems, and are always demanding more stuff. Too bad he’s forgotten that the Malstrom gamer is even HARDER to please!

Cheers and keep up the good work,
The ReaderThe rule is that you don’t get in an argument with an idiot because people won’t be able to tell the difference between the two of you. Hardcore gamers are idiots. Don’t argue with them.

I wouldn’t put myself in place with the Hardcore Gamer. I was excited by Wii Sports and Wii Fit and bought them on release. I was excited by Brain Age.

My expectations are the same as they were in the 80s and 90s. Nintendo once knew how to satisfy.

I was satisfied with Super Mario Brothers 2, Super Mario Brothers 3, and Super Mario Brothers 4. I could find nitpicks in them, sure, but the voracious demand for more 2d Mario kept going. I was not satisfied with 3d Mario which was a radical change. Instead of responding to the low sales performance of Super Mario 64, Nintendo declared it a success because Miyamoto had to be a genius.

I was satisfied with Metroid, Metroid 2, and Super Metroid. I was not satisfied with Metroid: Other M. How the game even got greenlit, I have no idea.

I was satisfied with Zelda 1, Zelda 2, Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, and even Ocarina of Time to a lesser extent. I was not satisfied with Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Majora’s Mask, Skyward Sword, and the other handheld Zelda games.

I was satisfied with the NES sports games. I was satisfied with the Gameboy sports games. I was satisfied with the Wii Sports game. I am not satisfied with Mario sports games on any platform.

I was satisfied with the DS. I was not satisfied with the 3DS. Things were going hunky dory with the DS but then Nintendo fucks it up with the 3DS because ‘now is the time for 3d!’

People like Miyamoto and other Nintendo software developers screw up the products and, often, the marketers have to fall on the sword for them. Who designed the 3DS hardware? It was Shigeru Miyamoto. Who was the brain behind the Virtual Boy? Shigeru Miyamoto. Who buried 2d Mario and kept putting out 3d Marios over and over again? Shigeru Miyamoto. Who placed Aonuma as head of Zelda because he made wooden dolls in college? Shigeru Miyamoto.

Who is going to get the blame for everything? The marketers. But every generation, we see Miyamoto portrayed as a bountiful ‘genius’ where those business people keep cramping up his style! Granted, I do think the marketers have much to be blamed for lately such as keeping the old brands around. They just want to be lazy this generation.

Gamers like myself are actually very easy to please. The problem is that Nintendo is more interested in pleasing themselves. To this day, they still think the Gamecube software is ‘brilliant’ even though the console was a failure. I can’t explain it.

But lately, it does feel like arguing with Nintendo now is like arguing with the hardcore gamer… it is arguing with an idiot. Reggie ‘arguing’ with the hardcore gamer is as fruitless as me maintaining a blog about Nintendo.
