Love your latest post about ‘absorbing’ content. It’s really disappointing that NSMB’s battle mode was not included in NSMB2, too. :(
Here is the IGN review that came out in 2004.
The modes it comes with are:
Deathmatch (everyone knows this one)
Team Deathmatch
Invasion (one of my favorites. All players are on a team and must survive waves of attacking aliens that get progressively stronger…)
Mutant (Deathmatch with a twist)
Capture the Flag
Bombing Run (a type of soccer mode. Really different.)
Last Man Standing (Death Match where only one person survives)
Double Domination (Death Match where you try to hold parts of the map)
Assault (A team tries to carry out certain objectives and the other team tries to stop them [like hijacking a train]. Teams switch sides.)
Onslaught (Large scale battlefields with vehicle combat)
One thing I always loved with Unreal Tournament was the mutators. Adding a mutator would change the game. So if you added ‘Instagib’, every weapon would shoot a one-shot kill laser beam. Another mutator is the ‘fat head’ one where the more kills you get, the fatter your head gets. Some crazy and fun stuff.
And of course, there are all the mods and stuff like Alien Swarm, Red Orchestra, and others. See them here before Gabe Newell tried to pass them off as ‘Vale Corporation Games’.
I remember being blown away by this map. I thought, “I thought this was a FPS? Now it is a Star Wars simulator!”
