Email: The Eighth Console Generation

Dear Master Malstrom,

I was just wondering: If you wanted to successfully enter the console market in the 8th generation as a new competitor to Nintendo, what would you have to do to succeed?

sincerely,
The Glorious Reader

The answer:

(Note how they were giving away a free game in the ad? Do you see console companies giving away GOOD free games today? No.)

(Sonic… free.)

(If Microsoft or Sony put out a mean platformer on their consoles, they could remake this commercial and have NSMB U and the Wii U be on the other TV.)

The most popular approach to beat Nintendo is to encourage Nintendo to commit Kamikaze Design. Pay game journalists to hype up everyone that 3d Mario is really good and Nintendo should only make them for now on. Say how incredible games like Wind Waker are and that Nintendo must continue this incredible ‘unique’ art style. Praise the N64 and Gamecube controllers and how they are the best. While praising everything Nintendo makes that doesn’t work, mock everything that does work. Mock 2d Mario and declare what a bad game it is and how Nintendo should stop making it. Say how awful Wii Sports and Wii Fit are and how Nintendo should never ever do anything with those concepts again. Most importantly of all, say how terrible the NES and Wii and SNES were as they were the most popular Nintendo consoles and, as a competitor, you don’t want Nintendo to do what works. Keep praising the Virtual Boy and say ‘wouldn’t it be great if Nintendo did unique things like that again?’.
