I cannot tell you how deflated and downright depressed I am today over the Wii U launch news.
The $299 Basic Set is a total rip-off and makes no sense to buy at all. I was hoping to get a system in white, but now if I want one, I have to get black. Perhaps it’s minor, but I’m not pleased that I can’t have the product the way I want it.
I’m interested in trying out Nintendo Land because I think it’ll be a fun multiplayer game, so I’m glad it’s bundled in with Premium, but it’s stupid that there is no game with the Basic set. What should’ve happened is that the current Premium set should be the ONLY set, and it should be priced at $299 with your choice of black or white.
I’m really interested in NSMBU as I really liked NSMBWii and it looks to be a good improvement over that game, but if I buy a Premium Set + NSMBU it will total to at least $420! That is outrageous. This whole situation is outrageous. It doesn’t even come with a non-HDMI cable in the box! Ridiculous.
I was hoping to hear about the eShop and the menu so I could see how things would be laid out and what sorts of organization options I had. Instead they showed Nintendo TVii with the name that is so bad I thought it was a joke. Reggie believes that Nintendo TVii and Miiverse raise the value of Wii U, but these two ‘services’ are actually bringing the value of the Wii U DOWN for me. Nintendo TVii looks like something you’d see in a Microsoft product. Why would I want to use this? I have standard cable, I don’t watch much TV, and the subscription services are simply not in my budget at the moment. Even if I did have these services, what would I use it for? To see what people thought about TV shows? If I want to do that I can go online and waste my time with that.
And I still know nothing about the games outside the launch window besides Smash Bros. What if this becomes like the 3DS, and after I get NSMBU there are no more games for me past the launch window? I am interested in other launch games like Rayman and Tank! Tank! Tank!, but what about beyond that? I just don’t know.
So yes, ultimately I am left angry and saddened by today’s news. Nintendo is not supposed to make me sad. This whole situation is unacceptable. One solution could be to buy the $349 version of black Wii U and sell Nintendo Land at the Used Game Store. They will accept it because it is not like Nintendo Land has online multiplayer or such that makes it hard to sell used.
Some people say ‘the prices show how much weaker the dollar has become’. Who’s fault is that? We all know Seattle’s voting habits. And besides, the product needs to be designed for the market as it is. There has been no sudden economic changes in the last few years. Nintendo knew the market was in depression and chose to go this route anyway.
Comparing the Wii and the Wii U is illuminating. Not only did the Wii launch at $249 with Wii Sports packed in, we had much more information. We were given a tour of the OS. We knew what would be the first Virtual Console games to be sold (as far back as E3 2006 for the first party ones).
If it were not for the 2d Mario, this entire launch would be seen as a PS3 type disaster. But as Super Mario World showed, 2d Mario can only do so much. Will people spend $400 to get to Mario? With that Mario, many people will.
Microsoft and Sony have to be very happy with the Wii U.
