Wii U is too expensive

In order to buy the new Nintendo console and a 2d Mario game, it costs me…

Over $400!

This is expensive. And the white Wii U is the Ghetto Edition. White is so last generation.

When I bought the SNES, I got the console and the Mario game for $200. There is inflation but not by this much.

If the price tag wasn’t so high, this console would be a smashing success. Just for myself, I can see myself buying NSMB U, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (I didn’t buy the Wii version), that Neo shooter on the E-Shop, NES Pinball 1983 Edition (because I’m quirky), and who knows? Maybe Call of Duty Black Ops 2. Maybe Rayman Origins. Maybe something else.

This ridiculous price tag is pushing this as a ‘delayed purchase’. If Nintendo ate the bullet and took a loss of $50, the $299 Deluxe Wii with Nintendo Land would be moving by a tremendous amount of volume. (And a $199 for Wii U vanilla would be extremely attractive.)

The US Consumer has changed due to the recession, and no one wants to spend money. Nintendo needs to get the price tag down fast or Microsoft is going to Sega Genesis the Wii U:

Xbox 360 and PS3 not only have the price advantage, they have the game library advantage as well. Since the Gamepad is more of a lifestyle device than a differentiator (as opposed to 16-bit graphics or 32-bit graphics or motion controls), Nintendo will find itself in a Red Ocean.
