You listed Star Control 3 among those other “GREAT” games last night. What little I heard of it scared me off from trying (Less Aliens, which implied less content, contradicting sc2’s writing, Mycon in clothing).
I was wondering if you could go into detail as to what makes the game great.
If you’re a Star Control fan, I think it is worth a buy at $2.50. I bought it when it was brand new at $50 and even bought the Star Control novel! But at $2.50? That’s as close as you’re going to get to it being free.
It’s not a game you’ll be replaying anytime soon. And the melee game isn’t as fun as Star Control 2’s. The new ships aren’t as interesting.
I do think they got the Star control atmosphere right. You do feel alone in a big hostile galaxy. Some of the new aliens are neat like the Xchaggers or Doog. I had fun going through the full game. I think I’ve replayed the game only a couple of times since then however.
The problem with strong series is that when a disappointing game comes, the hate lasts longer than it should. Consider Ultima 8 and Ultima 9. Are they disappointing? Yes. Are they even Ultimas? Maybe not. But can they be fun… especially when they are on sale for only a couple of dollars? Sure. If you were an Ultima fan and Ultima 8 and 9 were on sale for only a couple of dollars, I’d definitely recommend them. There is no need to carry on the hate for decades. There might be something there to be enjoyed.
Although I don’t think there is any redeeming value in Master of Orion 3.
I think a Star Control fan would have fun with Star Control 3 for only $2.50.
BTW, does anyone know if Toys for Bob still has the source code for The Unholy War? Now THAT is a game that needs a PC port.
