Those poor dears.
Seriously, it can be a problem when someone getting stuck to make the same type of product. No one wants to be like Frank Herbert. Frank Herbert wrote Dune which was a big success. His publisher wouldn’t allow him to make nothing but Dune sequels. So he wrote Dune sequels until the day he died.
No one should be locked into making the same type of game over and over again with one exception. If their other projects are not successful, they go back to doing the same type of game over and over. In other words, Frank Herbert can make a book that is not Dune. But if the books do not succeed, he goes back to making Dune works.
The reason why Nintendo keeps making Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games is not because the poor developers are not allowed to do anything else but that they are unable to make anything else that sells as well. Well, except for Wii Sports which Nintendo hates anyway. “It attracted the Wrong Type of Gamer, Malstrom! Not the type the third parties want in the install base,” Nintendo says. Uh huh. OK.
