Hello, Malstrom. I’m sure you’re tired of getting emails from me (Reggie, Lords of Shadow, etc.), but I appreciate all the responses thus far.
It appears that Aonuma wants to put DLC in the next Zelda game.

““Having people play together is a theme that’s always stuck in my mind, but it’s about trying to create what would work best for Legend of Zelda. We haven’t really found the perfect vehicle for that, but it’s a theme that I’m thinking about all the time, and I hope to be able to come up with an idea that will move us in that direction at some point. [I am interested in] the idea of communication between players. Let’s say a player does something in their game that affects an area, and then that is communicated back to another system, and that would introduce new elements to your game. I find that sort of communication really interesting. Obviously, we have thought about DLC, and we are thinking about it.” – Eiji Aonuma
Aonuma strikes me as the very clueless developer. He’s thinking about the perfect vehicle while he destroys the franchise. Skyward Chore’s awful design is turning me off from the franchise. Listen to how he talks about multiplayer like it’s some genius idea that he could only come up with. I swear, it’s like Nintendo developers don’t have a grasp of basic game design that’s been going on for years. Didn’t Phantom Hourglass have multiplayer? Didn’t Four Swords adventures have Multiplayer? How can he talk about this stuff as if it’s some new big thing for Zelda!?
The more he talks, the more I get pissed off just listening to him. All I want is a Zelda game with some actual meat to it’s combat. I just recently played the original Zelda. I couldn’t believe how much fun it was. Just one dungeon after the next. Then I got the magic sword and was beating whole sale ass on those centaurs. Why can’t we get centaurs anymore? Instead, we get 31 flavors of loincloth bokoblins with puzzle combat.
We certainly do get 31 flavors of loincloth bokoblins. Have you noticed that since Aonuma took over, there has been little to no traditional fantasy elements in Zelda? Zelda always used to be a fantasy game. There would be dragons, centaurs, wizards appearing and shooting at you, and all that.
If you don’t know what type of DLC should be in the game, then how about no DLC? Is Aonuma telling us, not intentionally, that Nintendo is demanding that DLC be put into all their games and the designers are trying to figure out how to put it in them?
Are you guys interested in a Nintendo who is interested in DLC? I’m not.
Isn’t Nintendo the company that says, “We don’t want to make just more levels and weapons.” And what does Nintendo do? “We want to make DLC!!!!!” I can’t get excited about the Wii U because there is so much hypocrisy coming from Nintendo.
Here’s what’s happening. I will use a moment in Wii’s glorious history to illustrate what is going on today. Before the Wii came out, third parties didn’t want to be on it. Nintendo decided to send their dev kits to the more indie developers. When Wii started selling big, Nintendo dropped their indie friends and prioritized towards the big boy industry companies like EA.
The Wii U is making me realize that Nintendo does not want me as their customer. They want me as their customer only when they cannot have the traditional Industry customers. Why haven’t we heard anything about the Virtual Console? It is because Nintendo doesn’t want those customers when it can have customers who are buying Industry games at $60 a pop.
Have you noticed that Nintendo has said NOTHING about their philosophy with the console? With the Wii, they went on and on about the Blue Ocean Strategy, with disruption, and with expanding the gaming population. You don’t hear any of that with the Wii U. What we do hear is that the Wii U can play games that are already on and coming out for the Xbox 360 and PS3. And we’re supposed to get excited by this?
Nintendo: “Oooohhhhh look! Call of Duty is on the Wii U in FULL HD GLORY! OMG!”
So what? Who cares?
Nintendo: “Oooohhhhh look! Grand Theft Auto V will be on the Wii U! Grand Theft Auto on the Nintendo console! Yes, baby, yes! YES! YES!”
*crickets*
Nintendo being so excited by Industry games reveals how unhappy Nintendo was with the Wii. Nintendo is more interested in peer acceptance with companies in the industry than with expanding the gaming population.
It may be branded Wii U, but there is very little Wii in the Wii U. A more accurate name for the console would be: Dual Screened HD Gamecube.
