Email: GoG Expansions

I know that you along with me and everyone else was wondering about the expansion to Alpha Centauri and pretty much every EA game on Gog.com. I just read through this thread and it looks like we should be expecting updates “soon”. There hasn’t been any concrete date put forth yet but it looks like it was a combination technical and legal issues. I wasn’t prompted to look too deeply into this since Alpha Centauri is meaty enough for me already and I can be fairly patient with updates. It was your recent posts on Star Citizen and Wing Commander, I needed to play to perceive the potential and promise that you’ve spoken about. I’m going to wait for the expansions before diving in, it seems like they’re very significant for this series. Besides, I’m still having too much fun in Sim City 2000, it’s so simple but very challenging and deep. I missed that about games.

Thanks you very much for sending this! It gives me hope that the missing EA expansions will return. I never bought the Alpha Centauri expansion (Alien Crossfire) or the expansions for the Wing Commander games. I would buy the games immediately when they became available. For those younger readers, getting an expansion you didn’t know existed at the time is like buying Super Mario World again and realize there are more worlds out there. It’s crazy that Nintendo hasn’t offered the E-reader levels to the GBA Mario games yet.For someone like myself who played Wing commander 1 and 2 when they were brand new, it won’t be any trouble for me to get back into the game (I suppose nostalgia does have its use). But for someone who hasn’t played the game before, it might be rough since this was pre-3d. I’ve had big problems trying to emulate Wing Commander well. I haven’t tried the GoG versions yet though. I had problems with Star Control 1 but GoG seems to emulate it well enough.

But then again, these games are like $5 or $2.50 on sale (oh noes! So expensive). If it ends up being the worst experience of your life, you haven’t lost like $60 for the POS games that come out today.

One thing though: the Wing Commander experience needs a joystick. Mouse and keyboard won’t do. Xbox 360 controller won’t really do as well. I think the Descent games are the same way. The most modern Wing Commander type game out there today is Freespace 2 which has a kickass soundtrack. Again, I recommend a joystick.

I think getting into Wing Commander is worth a try because if you do, you not only get into Wing Commander 1 and 2 (as well as 3 and 4 and where is Prophecy?) but also Privateer (freelance trading, econ type game), Armada (strat, empire building), Strike Commander (never played this one) and Wing Commander Academy (design your own missions).
