Email: System Shock 2 is the most requested game on gog.com

I’m REALLY glad that gog.com is finally distributing games compatible with Macs.  (What’s so “evil” about Macs, anyway?  I never got why people keep saying that on your posts.)  I was afraid that only PC users would get the benefit, but now I can finally play the games I’ve been wanting to play since the first time GOG’s been mentioned on your site.  I’ve created an account and have just started playing Tyrian 2000, which I’m absolutely LOVING because I actually feel as if I’m shooting and blowing stuff up with my Vulcan Cannon!  I’ve also just downloaded Ultima IV, but haven’t tried it yet as I’m taking a break from gaming.  (On a related note, I’m actually glad I now have an alternative choice for gaming than just my Nintendo consoles since Nintendo’s recently playing dumb with the customer considering the Wii U and 3DS).
But what I really just want to talk about is that you mentioned in an earlier “Email: Bioshock” post that System Shock 2 is still being played and people still want to buy it.  Well, it just so happens I was looking at GOG’s most requested games of the week and System Shock 2 was on the top of the list with +29, 837 votes (and still counting) which basically proves your point.  I am one of those who hadn’t play it, but I really want to get it (especially if they make it compatible with Macs).  However, you also said in that it was stuck in legal hell (in your “Email: Origin Quality Today” post) and whoever holds the IP is not going to do anything with it unless “they get bazillions.”  So, based on what you said, will it really not be possible to get a future digital copy of SS & SS2 whether for PC or Mac?  Or is there a chance GOG might be finding some way to create a deal with whoever holds the IP in the first place to put the games on their site?
Keep up the good work! :)Macs are evil because people can’t afford them. Macs are also poor for brand new PC games. In GoG conference, they even said for Mac users to double check their specs to make sure they could run Witcher 2. Since Macs are so integrated, it is difficult to tweak them for games. I think playing old games is probably best with Mac since there won’t be any hardware issues.

System Shock IP is never coming. It is being held ‘hostage’ by someone wanting an absurd amount of money for it. Oh well.

I’m awaiting the expansion packs for Alpha Centauri and Wing Commanders 1 and 2 (damn EA).

For new games added, I really want Homeworld 1 and 2 with their expansions. They had such powerful soundtracks. The designer of Homeworld said, “I want to recapture that feeling of what a great game was such as when you went to the game store and bought games for the NES like Metroid. I want to get to that level of quality.”

Tyrian 2000 is great. Ultima IV is going to be very rough to play due to its age. Theme Hospital is on sale and that is a good game. I see for Macs they have all the Ultima games pre-U7 including Ultima Underworld 1 and 2.

Currently, I started playing Might and Magic VI with very little experience of the M and M series. Damn. I see where World of Warcraft got its design from. The reviewers who said the M&M games have tremendous amount of gameplay time in them were not joking. I estimate it will be around 150 hours just to play through the sixth game the first time run (and there is so much replayability as like the original Final Fantasy, you can choose your party members and all that). I bought the Might and Magic Collection which comes with Might and Magic 1-6 plus another game which seems to be a scenario added with 5’s engine. Geez, how many hours will it take to beat all these games just once? 50 hours for each one at the minimal? And you kids think the Final Fantasy games are time sinks. They are casual games compared to this (and they really are). GoG has the collection for ten dollars but I got it on sale for $5. A good review of how the Might and Magic series works can be found here. It’s like a single player WoW.

I’ll probably buy that Interplay deal. Damn you, GoG. I’ll have so many games to consume that I won’t need something like a game console for the next decade. A shame Nintendo was never serious about their Virtual Console. If they offered permanent account bound purchases of old games, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I don’t think Nintendo understands how the digital market is supposed to work. It’s like the only difference is that they get to cut out Wal-Mart which is not the case. The consumer expects to get the advantages of the digital games. It’s absurd that the console maker expects to only get the advantages and have the digital game behave like a retail game.

Sega is offering their catalog, drm free, on Dotemu. No reason why Nintendo can’t do it on their consoles.

Nintendo is proving the author of “Game Over” correct, Nintendo is interested in games only as a form of psychological manipulation and doling them out like Godiva chocolates. But digital stores are destroying this model.

The days Nintendo can put out old games like the NES games as Godiva chocolates are over. We will not pay so much money for something we’re not even allowed to own. Nintendo calls it ‘managing the value of the IP’. I call it destroying it. Millions are refusing this deal and just pirating the roms and emulating them for free. Yet, Nintendo thinks it is doing its digital store correct.
