Email: Your thoughts on Disney buying LucasArts?

Master Malstrom,

You’ve probably been swamped with the news by now, but George Lucas just sold Star Wars to Disney.

Thoughts?  Personally, I’m worried about how Disney stated they would release a new movie every 2-3 years.  Also, Lucas still seems to have some sort of influence with the series, which isn’t exactly a good thing.

My thoughts are, “Maybe finally the old LucasArts games can be republished.” But with Disney, probably not.

I think Star Wars jumped the shark long ago. While Episodes 1-3 weren’t exactly the ‘best’ movies in the world, neither were Episodes 4-6. Star Wars succeeded because there was no competition in science fiction movies or television at the time. Before Star Wars, the only science fiction was the OLD 50s Star Trek episodes which were a few seasons, 2001: Space Odyssey (which is BORING), and some corny TV shows like Buck Rogers. Star Wars was always corny. The difference was that on the big screen with the ‘special effects’ and no competition, the film didn’t seem corny.

Movies were trying to be ‘serious art’ for ‘hardcore movie watchers’. Star Wars was a very casual movie. To this day, there are movie critics who despise Star Wars for making movies fun again. Today, there are tons of comic book and other ‘fun’ movies.

It’s not that Episode 1,2,3 were unfairly criticized for being ‘bad’. It’s that Episode 1,2,3 is more differentiated in nostalgia compared to Episode 4,5,6. (Children have no problem with Episode 1,2,3). Therefore, we can only assume Episode 7,8,9+ to be more like Episode 1,2,3. The spontaneous nature of the original trilogy cannot be recaptured. There is too much competition today, and only nostalgia is protecting the original series from the realization of just what corny shows (with good music) it always were.
