Here is Cliffy’s interview here. Reading between the lines, I think Cliffy intends on making a Zelda game. And by Zelda game, I mean the actual Zelda game and not the fruity-puzzle Aonuma style.
Why do I say this?
He has expressed a desire to get into RPGs. He loved Skyrim. “So he’s going to make a Skyrim type game!” Not necessarily. A new studio starts small, and he cannot make such a huge game like Skyrim. At least it is very improbable that would be his first game.
I’m pretty certain Cliffy wouldn’t do a TURN BASED RPG. I mean, c’mon. He is of the West. We like action. After all, he did Jazz Jackrabbit and unreal. He wouldn’t do a turn based RPG.
An action-RPG is a given. And the most famous one of all is Classic Zelda. He kinda gives it away when he mentions Link to the Past and says, “I want to make a game like Dark Souls, a game that can challenge you. Remember Link to the Past? That game challenged you.” That is absurd. Link to the Past was one of the easiest games ever made. Zelda I (Second Quest) and Zelda II were most definitely challenging. Link to the Past? Get out of here. You don’t mention Link to the Past in the same context as ‘challenging’. However, if he mentioned Zelda I or II that would be tipping his hand.
My guess is that Cliffy is going to make us a Zelda type game. We know he isn’t going to make another Gears like game. And we know he already was involved in a Metroid-like game with Shadow Complex. He says he loved RPGs. He cites Link to the Past in the interview. He’s also a Nintendo kid.
I see where this is going… ;)
