Hey Malstrom,
it’s me again. I bought FTL recently due to all the awards it’s getting and had a lot of fun. Does this game ever end? I think you are right about dropping the sci-fi aspect to attract a broader base. And yes, this game could have been made 20 years ago. It’s a pure and fun experience that doesn’t try to hide poor gameplay concepts behind fancy cutscenes, graphics, dialogue, or DLC. Really feels like a blast from the past. I also see you’ve been playing Castle Crashers, and while I think that game is great, I hate the fact that all the button prompts are only showing Xbox controller buttons. That’s ridiculous. Either way, it’s very fun with 3 friends.
What do you think of Heroes of Might & Magic 3, especially after looking at Eador? I grew up with the HoMM series, even played it in Russian back then, and the music and creature design always struck out to me. Romero has created so many masterpieces for this series, that there is an hour long video of him playing his favorites on piano.
A real shame what happened to the franchise after V.
On a completely unrelated note, I agree that Nintendo has been designing hardware with the Japanese market in mind primarily. If my information is correct, they tend to have fewer TVs in their households, so the Gamepad is an inherently more useful concept for them. Focusing on the domestic market makes sense with the current currency exchange. Looking at Monster Hunter and Platinum, Level 5, Namco, Tecmo and others, they are being way more aggressive at securing third party relations than relevant western ones. It comes as no surprise that the UK and large parts of Europe are rejecting the Wii U, there is simply no demand for what’s currently out and the pricing and SKU propositions are atrocious. The barren release schedule for the coming months certainly isn’t helping, either. What I wished FTL did was simulate the ‘main screen’ that the Star Trek show used and have the tactical display as console data. For example, what you would be seeing normally at FTL would be the console data. But when you warp into a system, you start with the main screen and see the evil pirate ship warp in or see the nebula. Of course, that would cost more money and time. I think it would be cool.I’m fairly new to the HOMM series so I haven’t had much time with HOMM 3 yet. I haven’t tried Eador at all. Those who have really like Eador.
Just as disclaimer for general purposes, the ‘games I’m playing’ doesn’t mean ‘games I think are awesome!’ They are just games I am currently playing. I think saying games SHOULDN’T be bought is just as important or more important than games that are good. Don’t bother with The Real Texas. And Puddle (which I didn’t even bother to put up there) is not worth it. For those I think are worth it would be FTL and Giana Sisters. But I need to play more of these new ‘indie’ games.
The controller configuration is extremely frustrating. I bought Donkey Kong Country Returns when it came out and still haven’t played it due to frustrations of the controllers (who destroyed this game by forcing ‘shake’ mechanics? I bet it was someone in NCL, and it was done on purpose). I have also had to set Dark Souls aside for now due to the awful PC controller setup.
The GOG sale is ending soon. Everyone better grab what ‘that one game they’ve been eyeing’. If I had to choose one game to recommend from the GOG library, it would be Alpha Centauri. With it now having the expansion pack, it is criminally insane that the game is selling for a few bucks.
