Lord British makes new RPG game with kickstarter

Go here to see the pitch.

As a longterm Ultima fan, what do I think of all this? My impressions is that this is an ‘old fart’ game. All these ‘industry veterans’ want to have one more trip on the merry go-round. Have you seen the graphics and art style? The game smells like farts.

Hindsight doesn’t just become 20/20, it becomes fictional as well. When people look back at Ultima, they don’t remember the competing marketplace of the time. Ultima’s “innovations” were there to compete against other RPGs to differentiate Ultima.

My question is how is this going to compete against other RPGs of today? Don’t just give me ‘Ultima legacy’ or ‘fictional world’ or ‘choose your own adventure’ or ‘ethical dilemmas’. There are new RPGs coming out all the time. How is this game going to compete with others from the basis of graphics, sound, content, etc.? On the graphics part, this game is already a huge disappointment.

In an interview, Lord British mentioned how the game would take five years to make and would be ‘episode based’. Frack that! This smells more like a vanity project than an actual game.

Check out these games! Many classics here from the Ultimas to Wing Commanders to System Shock to Alpha Centauri. My favorite game on this list is… ‘Barbies Riding Club’ seen at the very bottom! Hahahahahahahah.

If Lord British wishes for money to come to his kickstarter, he needs to address the graphics and do away with this horrific episode based game (sell it as one game and four expansions instead). He also should be talking up Ultima VII more and tell us more how Shrouds is like Ultima VII.

I get the distinct impression the crew behind Shrouds is out of touch with the general market at the moment. Video games are for young men, and young men are needed behind the scenes. Where is the new blood? Where are the young men? If not, this game will play like old farts.
