Email: If the WiiU is meant to be convenient…

… how come Nintendo didn’t make damn sure everything can be played on that screen, including Wii/VC games, and even Gamecube games? It would be might convenient to be able to play all those games when the rest of the family is using the TV.

… how come the loading times are so bad? Wasn’t avoiding loading times a big issue with Nintendo sticking with carts on the N64, and making sure the Wii and GC could minimize them?

… why can’t we control games how we want, with any controller handy at the moment?

… why can’t we use the Wii Remote on the gamepad screen? That would be convenient.

… why is the Wii to WiiU transfer so long and (if I’m not mistaken) one way instead of copying?

When some claim hardware is about convenience, they either are using that as a smokescreen (what Miyamoto is doing), or not getting what people do and don’t consider convenient.

I was watching a special on Tech TV (before it merged with G4), and a guy mentioned that after flip top caps for toothpaste came out, people were still screwing the caps off. It was because people didn’t consider screwcaps an inconvenience.

On the flip side, Sony and other companies missed the convenience of CD and DVD, and thought that people were only after the sound and video quality. Thus the actual convenience of MP3 and streaming video upset the supposed winners of the format wars for Super Audio CD versus DVD Audio and HD-DVD versus blu-ray.

Basically, I agree with your statement that convenience is just a bonus to new tech, and of course so is avoiding inconvenience, which Nintendo has not done.Silly emailer! Convenience is defined as convenience for Nintendo.

It is more convenient for Nintendo to re-use a console name instead of thinking of something new. It’s not like they’ve had over half a decade to do so or anything.

It is more convenient for Nintendo to not put out an account system and tether everything to the hardware.

It is more convenient for Nintendo to re-use old assets, such as music, for NSMB games instead of actually giving a damn.

It is more convenient for Nintendo to region lock everything because every ounce of profit must be squeezed out!

It is more convenient for Nintendo to take their time in putting out VC game releases.

It is more convenient for Nintendo to dip the Wii U prototype games into Nintendo IP paint and call it ‘Nintendo Land’ than to do something creative.

It is more convenient for Nintendo to delay Pikmin 3 even though it was a ‘launch title’ supposedly.

For the consumer, the Wii U offers nothing but inconvenience.

The inconvenience of no account system…

The inconvenience of no battery life on their big ass controller…

The inconvenience of a ridiculously high price tag.

The inconvenience of no third party games.

The inconvenience of Gamecube sequels and Gamecube re-releases which no one wants.

Wii U isn’t the disaster. The disaster is the arrogance of the Nintendo executives who ignored all the warning signs starting with E3 2011.
