Greetings Master Malstrom,
You may or may not have seen this kickstarting project: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/susanwilson/9-year-old-building-an-rpg-to-prove-her-brothers-w
It’s pretty much what it says on the tin, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of that girlswhocode post you made earlier. Once again, computer science is being made cool/cute and, and this shows that the CS workforce is being flooded. (I was going to major in CS, but then decided to do chemical engineering instead because I fell in love with chemistry and doing useful stuff. Anyway, that’s beside the point). Really, this whole thing boils down to taking two evils (hipster computer science and crowdfunding) and smashing them together.
And unrelated, but RPG maker? seriously. I have a friend who owns a business in web design and guess when he started web coding? (actual HTML/CSS coding, not this RPG designing crap) That’s right, 9. If he can figure it out, so can she; it’s not rocket science. Heck, the basics hardly even use basic high school math. Having her use RPG maker completely undermines the point (and a terrible point at that, girl power is becoming a cliche), that the project is trying to make.
I can’t imagine this will end well, but maybe you see it differently.
Regards,
Your reader
P.S. That camp is ripoff, just saying
That girl is doing exactly what JRPG nerds were doing twenty years ago.
Maybe I’m just getting old, but I remember when no one did CS. It was like a dark art or something.
Computers were so not cool decades ago. Computer guys were seen as horrors.
Now… it is a different story.
Anyway, I’m done with the CS emails. Let’s stop beating this horse. We’ll see what happens with the field in the upcoming years. I predict more Andria Richards.
